Season of Hell's Legacy is Diablo IV's 30th-anniversary season. Patch 3.2.1 build 73552 shipped to all platforms on September 15, 2026. The season puts Deckard Cain in the field, opens Waking Nightmares that replay Diablo I–III memories, and sockets Soul Splinters onto War Plans and jewelry. Steam is running a free-play window for the base game until September 21, 2026 at 10 a.m. PT, with all classes and leveling to 30. About 15 percent of seasonal objectives, including Rank VIII rewards, require Lord of Hatred; the rest of the track runs without that expansion.

Waking Nightmares

Waking Nightmares are the season's named memory dungeons. The largest set are multi-level capstones: Tristram Cathedral, Arreat Summit, and the Durance of Hate. Those scale into Torment and add a pinnacle layer at Torment 10 and above. Dungeon-length memories sit at fixed world locations in the Den of Evil style. Overworld Nightmares are one-room pop-ups, including Queen Araneae and Flayers, that spawn as you travel Sanctuary rather than as keyed instances.

Run the large capstones when you want a full memory dungeon and a Torment ladder. Use the fixed dungeons when you are already in that region. Treat overworld pop-ups as opportunistic fights while you farm Helltides or Whisper bounties. Nightmares are how the season feeds Soul Splinter swaps and anniversary loot without inventing a separate seasonal map. Capstones are Tristram Cathedral, Arreat Summit, and the Durance of Hate. Fixed dungeons sit in Den of Evil-style locations. Overworld pop-ups include Queen Araneae and Flayers. Run capstones for the long memory; pick up pop-ups while you farm Helltides.

Soul Splinters on this season

Season 15 sockets one Prime Evil splinter at a time and up to three duplicitous gems in jewelry. Diablo's Splinter of Terror modifies Helltide and Infernal Hordes and deals Fire. Baal's Splinter of Destruction modifies the Undercity and Lair Bosses and deals Cold. Mephisto's Splinter of Hatred modifies The Pit and Nightmare Dungeons and deals Physical. Bearing a Prime Evil splinter also makes you more vulnerable to that Prime Evil.

The eight jewelry gems are Anguish (Andariel), Sin (Azmodan), Lies (Belial), the Black Soulstone, Pain (Duriel), the Mother (Lilith), Hellfire (Na-Krul), and Damnation (Skarn). Each is a boon plus a liability. Open the dedicated Soul Splinters ledger for the full roster, then come back here for the season calendar and Nightmare types. Jewelry gems are Anguish, Sin, Lies, the Black Soulstone, Pain, the Mother, Hellfire, and Damnation. Socket up to three. Keep Prime Evil sockets on a separate one-at-a-time rule. Open the Soul Splinters child page for the full table.

Patch 3.2.1 and the Steam free window

Blizzard shipped patch 3.2.1 build 73552 on September 15, 2026 with the season. That is the live build for Waking Nightmares, the splinter roster, and the seasonal rank track. The official season article and the Steam announcement are the two first-party pages for dates, free-play rules, and named systems.

Steam's free window covers the base game through September 21, 2026 at 10 a.m. PT. You get the live class roster and leveling to 30. The store payload still marks the game as not permanently free. After the window, you buy a Standard, expansion, or Age of Hatred SKU if you want to keep playing. Getting started walks the Battle.net install order. Build 73552 is the live patch on every platform that received the September 15, 2026 ship. The free window is Steam-only as a promotion clock. Console owners skip that clock and still play the same season systems on patch 3.2.1.

Legacy Uniques

Season 15 permanently adds nine legacy Uniques from older Diablo games to Seasonal and Eternal realms. Class gates are called out in the official notes; named examples include In-Geom and Messerschmidt's Reaver. These are not a full unique-item database and they do not replace the live unique pool. They are a 30th-anniversary injection that stays after the season if you earn them.

If you are chasing a specific legacy Unique, read the class gate on the item before you commit a seasonal character. A barbarian-gated axe does nothing for a Sorcerer seasonal push. Pair the hunt with the Prime Evil splinter that actually modifies the activity where you farm, then spend leftover jewelry sockets on duplicitous gems that match that plan. Nine legacy Uniques become permanent on Seasonal and Eternal. In-Geom and Messerschmidt's Reaver are the named examples. Read the class gate before you chase one on a seasonal character that cannot wear it.

How to spend the week

Create a seasonal character, socket a Prime Evil splinter that matches the two activities you will actually farm, and run Waking Nightmares for swaps. Capstone Nightmares are the long memory dungeons; overworld pop-ups fill travel time. Keep one Prime Evil splinter on at a time. Fill jewelry with up to three duplicitous gems.

If Rank VIII is a goal, budget Lord of Hatred. If it is not, stay on the base game and still play the anniversary systems. The official trailer on this page is the motion brief; the Blizzard News article is the patch and splinter roster. Steam's announcement is the free-play clock. New players should finish Getting started first, then come back to Nightmares. Owners should create a seasonal character the same day as the patch and socket a Prime Evil splinter before the first Pit or Helltide session of the week, then run one capstone Nightmare that night.

Why this is the anniversary season

Season of Hell's Legacy is the 30th-anniversary season. Deckard Cain is in the field. Waking Nightmares replay Diablo I–III memories inside Diablo IV. Prime Evil splinters echo Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto. Legacy Uniques from older games return as a permanent nine-item injection. Patch 3.2.1 build 73552 is the live build for all of that.

The season is not a new expansion SKU. It runs on the base game with optional Lord of Hatred rank gates. Steam's free window is a timed on-ramp into this season, not a rename of the business model. After September 21, 2026 at 10 a.m. PT the window closes and the store is a paid SKU again.

Use this page for Nightmare types, patch date, free-play clock, and legacy Unique existence. Use Soul Splinters for the eleven named gems. Use Endgame for the activity table those gems modify. Use Getting started for the Battle.net install order.
